From Issue 2.6 - June/July 1996
The 18th annual Mr. San Francisco Leather contest took place at the Alcazar Theater on April 20. After the judges put the seven well-qualified contestants through their paces, the winner was Gary Virginia, the first Mr. Daddy's Leather. The second runner-up was George Carreras, sponsored by Mercury Mail-order, and the first runner-up was Daniel Sonnenfeld, representing the deaf leather community and sponsored by A Taste of Leather. Rounding out the roster of contestants were Mr. SF Eagle Joe Piazza, Mr. Edge Leather Gary Strickland, Mr. Castro Station Bart Bartholemew, and independent candidate former International Mr. Bear John Caldera.
Former International Mr. Drummer Brian Dawson and Ms. San Jose/South Bay Leather Miranda von Stockhausen performed ably as emcees, Audrey Joseph was presented with the Peter Austin Community Service Award (named after 1989's Mr. SF Leather), and even Mayor Willie Brown got in on the act, proclaiming May 20 to be "Mr. SF Leather Day."
Congratulations to Gary, and thanks to all the contestants and
sponsors -- and to Mr. SF Leather 1995 Wolf Mirasol for a great year!
